Santiago (Fides Service) - Once again this year Catholic university students and high school pupils in Chile are spending part of their three month Summer holidays on mission in various parts of the country as part of the 4th National Mission involving 56 different universities and schools. The National Mission 2007 was launched on 5 January at Campus San Joaquín of the Pontifical Catholic University and a special Mass at the Cathedral of Maipu presided by Cardinal Francisco Javier Errázuriz, Archbishop of Santiago de Chile. The mission should last until 15 January although universities are free to choose another date.
At the moment about 2,500 Chilean students are bearing witness to the faith in 58 different urban and rural parts of the country as well as about 150 student participants from Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador, Cuba, Peru, Bolivia, Uruguay
Groups of about 40 students of different universities are assigned to each zone in areas indicated by the local Bishop. The programme consists also of social work, visiting families, old people, children, people in hospitals and prisons, and putting the students skills and knowledge at the service of the people in the light of brotherly Love which comes from Christ. Door to door mission is an important part of the mission which includes evangelisation through culture sport and popular religiosity. (RG) (Agenzia Fides 10/1/2007; righe 22, parole 315)
