VATICAN - PONTIFICAL LATERAN UNIVERSITY INTERNATIONAL MEETING FOR 25TH YEAR OF PONTIFICATE: FIDE ET RATIO ENCYCLICAL, FIVE YEARS ON

Vatican City (Fides Service) – Within the framework of celebrations to mark the 25 years of pontificate of Pope John Paul II, the Pontifical Lateran University PLU has organised 9-11 October an international meeting with the title: “The desire to know the truth. Philosophy and theology, fides et ratio five years on”. Theologians and philosophers of the most prestigious European universities will reflect on the them of truth and its relation with mankind.
The Meeting, which will have four sessions and a round table discussion, will open with an address by Cardinal Camillo Ruini, the Pope’s vicar for the diocese of Rome, and a prolusion by Bishop Rino Fisichella, Rector of the university. The event was planned by the Rector with some of the most well known experts on the encyclical, Prof. Antonio Livi, dean of the Philosophy faculty and Giuseppe Lorizio PLU docent of fundamental theology.
The first session – truth of faith and truth of reason – will reflect on theoretical questions of the faith-reason relation. In the afternoon of the 9 October there will be a second session of a historical character. The third session, connected with the second, will focus on “Vicissitudes and protagonists”. Lastly the session “Fide et ratio a programme for dialogue” will see the presence of Reformed, Orthodox and Catholic experts. The encyclical will be studied from a point of view of dialogue ecumenical, inter-religious and inter-cultural. The round table discussion on Saturday 11 October will trace a critical summary of the reception of the important papal document and outline prospects for the future.
