AMERICA/MEXICO - Bishops oppose new law to recognise same sex unions: “when the value of the family is undermined by social and economic pressure, the Church reacts and reaffirms that the family formed of the union of a man and a woman is necessary for the private good of the person and for the common good of every society, nation and state”

Mexico City (Agenzia Fides) - The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Mexico have said that a proposed bill on Societies of Co-existence "claims to legalise relations of societies of co-existence and in doing so intends to originate legislation which encourages mechanism which approve marriage of persons of the same sex with the right to adopt children". In a statement signed by Bishop Carlos Aguiar Retes of the diocese of Texcoco, general secretary of the Bishops’ Conference, the Bishops say "this type of law intends to give incomplete and temporary solutions for a problem which is much more complex". The controversial Law passed with 43 votes in favour and 17 against, allows persons of the same sex to form "a common home "
The Bishops recall that the “family is the fundamental human community. As the family is, so is the nation because so is also the individual citizen". Hence "when the value of the family is undermined by social and economic pressure, the Church reacts and reaffirms that the family formed of the union of a man and a woman is necessary for the private good of the person and for the common good of every society, nation and state ". In this sense the bishops recall that the Church "looks with true love on all men and women without preference or inclination", nevertheless she cannot fail to oppose “attitudes which damage the integral life of the human person". They conclude calling on legislators to "pass laws which uphold the dignity of the human person and the family because the family is the true measure of the greatness of any nation ".
