Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - “I am he who is”. On Horeb, the mountain of God, Moses sees the blazing bush (Exodus Chapter 3) and hears God who sends him to Pharaoh to bring the Israelites out of Egypt?… “Moses then said to God, 'Look, if I go to the Israelites and say to them, "The God of your ancestors has sent me to you," and they say to me, "What is his name?" what am I to tell them?' God said to Moses: “'I am he who is”, and He added: “'This is what you are to say to the Israelites, "I am has sent me to you” (verses 13-14).
Jesus uses this revealing term, found only in the Gospel according to John , although he never actually says: “I am the Son of God” … You will die in your sins. Yes, if you do not believe that I am” (John 8, 24). “When you have lifted up the Son of man, then you will know that I am …” (John 8, 28). “In all truth I tell you, before Abraham ever was, I am” (John 8, 58). At the Last Supper when Jesus washes his disciples’ feet he says: « I tell you this now, before it happens, so that when it does happen you may believe that I am” (John 13, 19). (J.M.)
