Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - The Son of Man. The prophet Daniel, deported to Babylon by King Nabucodonosor around 597 BC had this vision: “behold, there came with the clouds of the sky one like a son of man, and he came even to the ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. There was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all the peoples, nations, and languages should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed” (Daniel 7, 13-14).
Jesus always uses the name Son of Man when he refers to himself: “'In all truth I tell you, you will see heaven open and the angels of God ascending and descending over the Son of man.” (John 1, 51) Jesus tells Nathaniel.
Speaking of the return of the Son of Man at the end of time Jesus says: “And then the sign of the Son of man will appear in heaven; then, too, all the peoples of the earth will beat their breasts; and they will see the Son of man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.” (Matthew 24, 30).
Jesus is taken before the Sanhedrin to be judged. “And the high priest said to him, 'I put you on oath by the living God to tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God.' Jesus answered him- 'It is you who say it. But, I tell you that from this time onward you will see the Son of man seated at the right hand of the Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.'” (Matthew 26, 63-64). (J.M.)
