VATICAN - Vatican secretary of state, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, writes a letter to the president of Social Weeks in Spain for XL edition

Monday, 6 November 2006

Vatican City (Fides) - The Vatican secretary of state, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, sent a letter to Prof. José Tomás Raga Gil, president of Social Weeks in Spain on the occasion of the opening of the XL edition on the theme “Christian proposals for a culture of co-existence”. “The term ‘co-existence’ -Cardinal Bertone writes - manifests commitment to not limit oneself to generic tolerance, which causes discrimination against or marginalisation of those profound values and ideals which mark more than other things the identity of individuals and groups. Respect for diversity is not submission nor must it close the door to friendship, to harmony and collaboration in what is common to all, first and foremost, the common good”. This commitment, through Social Weeks, to “diffuse the Social Doctrine of the Catholic Church in the field of culture and research and in the conscience of all called to contribute to the common good according to the condition and responsibility of each” for Cardinal Bertone must be given “particular importance” 100 years since the first edition.
