Quebec (Agenzia Fides) - In a meeting of the Canadian Bishops’ Conference, 16-20 October in Quebec, Cardinal Marc Ouellet, Archbishop of Quebec spoke about preparations for the 49th International Eucharistic Congress in June 2008 in Quebec in2008, with the motto "Eucharist, God’s Gift for the Life of the World " focussing on three main themes to deepen awareness and appreciation for the Eucharist and its importance in Christian life: "Holy Eucharist gift of God, "; "The Eucharist, the New Covenant"; “For the Life of the World”. The Congress will take place 15 - 22 June 2008, coinciding with the 4th centenary of the founding of the city of Quebec, see of the first Catholic diocese north of Mexico (see Fides 23/1/2006).
The event is being prepared at the local, national and international levels. The organisers expect at least 15,000 participants. Cardinal Ouellet said in preparation for the event the “Arc of the New Covenant”, will travel the breadth and length of Canada, like the WYD Cross in preparation for World Youth Day. The artistic work finely decorated with Eucharistic images was blessed by earlier this year by Pope Benedict XVI in Rome. One of the first stops will be Montreal on Corpus Christi 2007, 15 June.
