OCEANIA/ SOLOMON ISLANDS - “Rediscover your vocation!”: Seminar for Catholic teachers called to accompany students on a path of human, cultural and spiritual growth

Honiara (Agenzia Fides) - More than 50 Catholic teachers took part in a formation Seminar at St. Joseph’s School in Tenaru organised jointly by the archdiocese of Honiara Solomons and the diocese of Sale, Australia.
Speakers included bishops, theologians, experts head teachers with vast experience in education in Catholic schools. The aim of the workshop was to help teachers rediscover themselves and their vocation in the classroom. In his keynote address, Archbishop Adrian Smith highlighted the importance of ‘Communio’. He said that teachers should network, work together and develop on the efforts of the early missionaries. “Catholic teachers should have a pastoral plan, rediscover themselves as classroom missionaries and try to take steps necessary to help the poor”, said the Archbishop. During the workshop the teachers looked at the partnership between the Dioceses of Sale and the Archdiocese of Honiara.
“Teaching is a sacred job and that makes teachers a gift”, said Chris Holt principal of Sion Marist School,. He also said that, children need to be taught the love of God. “It is through teaching that one touches the mystery of God’s spirit and that we need to guide our culture in authenticity”. The teachers had the chance to share ideas, knowledge and skills from each other.”.
The local Catholic Church is committed to the service of education vital in Solomons recently devastated in recent years by civil strife, to ensure through education of youth a better future for the country in.
Some Catholic schools in Solomons are twinned with Catholic schools in other countries, Australia for example, in view of enriching exchange of experience, teachers and pupils.
