VATICAN - Christian Prayers in the Languages of the World: Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be in Turkmen: Turkmenistan Catholic Mission marks 9th anniversary

Friday, 29 September 2006

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) -- To continue the urgent task of new evangelisation launched by Pope John Paul II, Fides News Service is working on a section on Christian Prayers in as many languages as possible (see Fides 29/8/2006). We are most grateful to local Churches who have responded with enthusiasm, welcoming the initiative and sending in material which will be of benefit for all as the Dossier will be available on our web site and also sent via e-mail on request.
In some mission territories only a few prayers are available in the local language. This is the case for Turkmenistan. It is with deep joy that we give four main prayers in Turkmen today 29 September. Precisely 9 years ago on 29 September 1997 Pope John Paul II created the Catholic Missio sui juris of Turkmenistan. Polish born Mission Superior Fr. Andrezj Madej, OMI, delighted with the Fides initiative sent the following prayers as they are prayed in Turkmen:
Taňrynyň dogasy... [Our Father]
Perişdäniň salamy... [Hail Mary]
Ata, Ogla we Gudratly Ruha şöhrat! [Glory be to the Father...]
The Catholic Mission of Turkmenistan has an area of 488,000sq km, a population of about 5 million people. The Catholic community of fifty is in the care of the Superior Fr Andrezj Madej, 2 priests, 2 brothers and 2 Sisters.
In the coming month of October, month of mission and the Rosary prayer, we can pray the rosary with and for the Mission of Turkmenistan in these three prayers most loved by Christians. (J.M.) (Agenzia Fides 29/9/2006, righe 16, parole 216)
