OCEANIA/AUSTRALIA - “The voice of Catholic education!”: National Catholic Education Commission Conference 27 - 29 September in Sydney

Wednesday, 27 September 2006

Sydney (Agenzia Fides) - Rethinking the duty and mission of the Catholic school in modern day Australia in a context ever more globalised and marked by many different religions and cultures: this is the theme of National Catholic Education Commission Conference to be held 27 - 29 September in Sydney. The gathering represents an important moment for reflection, orientation and programming, in which the Catholic community in Australia (institutional component, religious orders, associations and movements, committed laity and experts in the field of education) will view the situation in the important sector of Catholic education.
The work will focus on various issues: the continually changing role of the Catholic school in Australia in a multicultural and multireligious society; how to promote and safeguard the essential mission and identity of schools; how to meet new needs of pupils and teachers; redefine the contribution of Catholic schools to society and the nation.
Speakers and topics will include: Cardinal George Pell, Archbishop of Sydney, “Religion and culture in modern day Australia”; Prof. Kamah Oniah Kamaruzaman of the Muslim University of Malaysia, “Understanding and practising one’s Religion”; Professor Mary Kalantzis from Melbourne “Religion e culture in Australia’s schools”. The daily programme will include Mass and time for discussion and sharing.
Presenting the conference the National Catholic Education Commission said “Catholic schools offer a major contribution to social, cultural, economic and political life in Australia. One out of five young Australians was educated at a Catholic school. Many non Catholic families choose a Catholic school for their children because of the quality of education”. This reflects the search for values in Australia today: “We live in a society of many voices. This conference is about the voice of our Catholic schools and how this voice is heard and understood”.
