ASIA/INDONESIA -Another child dies of avian flu bringing the death toll in Indonesia to 51

Jakarta (Agenzia Fides) - Another child, aged nine, died last week of avian flu bringing the total number to 51 since bird flu first struck the country in October 2003. In the first six months of 2006 63 cases were registered.
The child living in Ciputat Raya, had been ill for two weeks after playing with a bird affected by the deadly H5N1 virus, died in a hospital in Jakarta before tests confirmed the presence of the virus.
A week earlier the Indonesian health ministry confirmed the death of the 50th case, a child of eleven.
This is the most serious epidemic ever of avian flu which started in the Far East and has so far infected 247 humans, killing 145 mainly in Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand and China. (AP) (25/9/2006 Agenzia Fides; Righe 15; Parole:168)
