ASIA/SOUTH KOREA - Solemn Mass closes Eucharistic Congress 2006 in archdiocese of Seoul

Saturday, 23 September 2006

Seoul (Agenzia Fides) - A solemn Mass celebrated on 16 September at the Catholic University of Korea in Seoul marked the closing of Eucharistic Congress 2006 organised by the archdiocese of Seoul. The Congress, on the theme “Christ our Life” and convoked by Cardinal Nicholas Cheong, archbishop of Seoul, opened on 18 June and was celebrated with various initiatives in every parish in the diocese.
Recalling the example of St. Andrea Kim Dae-geon, martyred 160 years ago Cardinal Cheong said “We celebrate Holy Mass to have his same faith and the strength to follow his example. As descendants of the martyrs we are called to be authentic Catholics who practice sacrifice, love and sharing, which are the spirit of the Eucharist”. The Cardinal also said he hoped a similar Congress could be held one day for Catholics in North Korea, urging those present to “pray that our brothers and sisters in the North may receive the priceless gift of the Eucharist”.
The closing Mass was attended by at least 11,000 people and, thanks to live broadcast on state TV and radio, many unable to be present nevertheless took part with devotion and faith.. (Agenzia Fides 23/9/2006 righe 25 parole 245)
