Hong Kong (Agenzia Fides) - Aware that lay Christians need proper formation in the faith in order to live their faith in Jesus Christ in daily life, Hong Kong diocese has made formation of the laity a major priority. The diocesan bulletin Kong Ko Bao says that to ensure ongoing formation for the laity structures must be reformed. The diocese intends to close the diocesan commission for lay formation and the diocesan office for lay formation on 31 August. Diocesan assistant Mgr. Domenico Chan explains: “These two structures are now outdated. We will focus now on formation to enable the laity to meet the challenges of our day. Pastoral workers involved in formation of the laity must be trained to recognise the signs of the times, for example the spiritual and moral needs of the laity. Lay formation is a task for the entire diocese. There are lay formation groups in each of our 33 parishes. We will offer new formation marked by variety and plurality, maturity and adaptation to meet the challenges of modern culture.” Spiritual director of the Hong Kong Association of the Laity Fr Lau Tak Kwing said, “Basic Ecclesial Communities have the capacity, flexibility and programmes oriented to formation. By closing the two older structures we will save material and human resources which can be used elsewhere”. (Agenzia Fides 28/08/2006 Righe: 26 Parole: 306)
