OCEANIA/ SOLOMON ISLANDS - “Serving the Lord with joy”: Local Catholic priests renew pastoral commitment

Thursday, 27 July 2006

Honiara (Agenzia Fides) - Serving the Lord with Joy was the theme of an annual retreat held in Honiara in the Solomon Islands attended by 36 local Catholic priests.
The retreat was preached by Fr. Jim Nolan and the priests were joined by their bishops Archbishop Adrian Smith of Honiara and Bishop Chris Cardone of Auki.
The participants agreed that the retreat was an opportunity for prayer and reflection, sharing, deepening brotherhood and also discussing priorities and challenges. One very positive point which emerged was that vocations in Solomons are increasing. However the participants stressed the necessity of special attention to formation. Pastoral difficulties discussed included the effects of modern day global culture on parishes, schools, and society. The priests identified ways and means of improving school pastoral care, youth pastoral, how to prevent and fight against AIDS, to promote evangelisation, inter-religious dialogue, and finally how to combine contemplation with mission.
