EUROPE/ITALY - "Where is Europe going? Culture, peoples, institutions": September Symposium for European University Teachers

Rome (Agenzia Fides) - "Where is Europe going ? Culture, peoples, institutions" is the theme of the 5th Symposium for European University Teachers to be held in Rome starting 28 September at the Vicariate of Rome. The event is organised in view of a European Meeting of National University Pastoral Delegates promoted by the Council of European Bishops’ Conferences CCEE. The Symposium will by opened by Cardinal Camillo Ruini, the Pope’s vicar for Rome diocese and speakers will include Cardinal Antonio Llovera Cañizares, Archbishop of Toledo, Spain, Prof. Remi Brague Sorbonne University Paris, France and Prof. Christian Starck Georg-August University, Goettingen, Germany.
From Friday 30 September to Sunday 1 October the Symposium will continue at the Aula Magna of the Libera University Maria Santissima Assunta. About 250 delegates from 35 countries will reflect on the following: integration and subsidiarity, perspectives of solidarity, a new humanism for European culture, Christian contribution to building Europe. The Symposium will, conclude with Mass presided by Bishop Rino Fisichella, rector of the Pontifical Lateran University.
The Symposium is organised in preparation for European Meeting of National University Pastoral Delegates to be held in June 2007 on the theme "a new humanism for Europe. Role of the Universities". The university world is encouraged to reflect on the path of the European continent and re-launch the role of the university to build a common house of Europe. As in the past the Christians in Europe intend to accompany and support the cultural elaboration of the academic community and to propose the Gospel as a source of new humanism able to orient the cultural challenge so that it is at the service of the growth of the whole person and every person.
