Medellin (Agenzia Fides) - As part of preparations for the 5th General Conference of the Council of Latin American Bishops’ Conferences the 3rd International Theology Congress will be held in Medellin, Colombia from 8 - 11 August on the theme: "Situation of Theology in Latin America in view of CELAM 5 ". Participants will reflect from the theological point of view questions to be discussed by CELAM 5 taking into account the situation of the Church in Latin America whose communities are challenged by epochal changes affecting personal, family and social life. The organisers say the Congress will be an opportunity to reflect on themes such as discipleship, mission and following Christ, and to trace the theological path for the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean.
Specific Congress aims include: inform about theological reflection and results emerging from preparation for CELAM 5; offer a theological contribution to preparations for CELAM 5 considering Latin American situations and theology; promote meetings and dialogue for Latin American theology in view of CELAM.
The Congress, organised by the Faculty philosophy and theology of the Luis Amigo University Foundation and the Pontifical Javeriana University, is open to anyone interested in theological reflection, those who tackle theology from the viewpoint of other disciplines, those who teach theology, to priests, religious, parish and diocesan communities interested in theology.
Speakers include Bishop Andrés Stanovnik of the diocese of Reconquista CELAM secretary general; Fr Sidney Fones, CELAM assistant secretary general; Fr Víctor Codina, S.J, professor of theology at ISET Institute for Higher Theological Studies of the Catholic University of Bolivia in Cochabamba; Fr Alberto Vita Rampicante Moro, S.J, of the Pontifical Javeriana University.
