Tuesday, 25 July 2006

Rome (Agenzia Fides) - After 13 years of mission among the poor people of Mishikishi, in Zambia, the Unione Medico Missionaria Italiana UMMI has concluded its activity and withdrawn.
Since 1993 UMMI has worked in Zambia’s Copperbelt region in the rural district of Mishikishi to support the 60,000 residents in St Luke’s Catholic Mission and nearby districts of Chilese, Miengwe, Kashitu and Mutaba, in the eastern health-district of Masaiti.
The programme included training of local personnel to deal with life threatening situations such as underdevelopment and malnutrition in this part of the country. The UMMI programme it is estimated reached almost one third of the three million malnourished children in the district of Mishikishi.
UMMI interventions in Zambia included healthcare at Mishikihi Rural Health Centre; field activity to support 4 outlying dispensaries in Chilese, Miengwe, Kashitu and Mutaba; a hydro-farm project which bored 70 wells for use of farmers and a number of community vegetable gardens to support specific feeding programmes in the area.
