Madrid (Agenzia Fides) - The Bishops of Spain endorse the Pope’s call for a Day of Prayer and Penance on Sunday 23 July to obtain from God the gift of peace in the Middle East for peace. Cardinal Antonio María Rouco Rouco archbishop of Madrid circulated the Pope’s call to all parishes and churches in the archdiocese calling on the faithful to join in special prayers for peace.
Archbishop Agustín García-Gasco of Valencia, urged Catholics to heed the call of Benedict XVI and offer special prayers for peace at Masses on Saturday and Sunday. He encouraged families in particular respond to the Pope’s call for “prayer and penance". He advised parish priests to use the special votive mass for peace as given in the Roman Missal.
Archbishop Lluís Martínez Sistach of Barcelona, urged the faithful to take part in the Day and communicated that the diocesan Caritas office is organising aid for the suffering people in the Middle East region.
In a special letter calling on the faithful to join the Day of Prayer and Penance called by the Pope, Archbishop Julián Barrio Barrio of Santiago writes "Violence, terrorism and war must be eradicated because they generate death, offend the dignity of the human person and are never a solution to conflict". He concludes: " Let’s cross the frontier of our passivity and insensitivity to immerse ourselves in the grief and suffering of so many of our brothers and sisters, and join the day of prayer and penance. We cannot let this call go unheeded. Solidarity is the human family’s path to peace."
For his part Archbishop Jaume Pujol Balcells of Tarragona, expressed full support for the Holy Father’s request encouraging the people to pray for the gift of peace and especially at Masses on Sunday 23 July. (RG) (Agenzia Fides 22/7/2006; righe 26, parole 329
