AMERICA/PERU - “We must look to the future with optimism ... and work for unity to guide and help our country towards progress and prosperity”: Bishops’ post election call

Lima (Agenzia Fides) - “The election is over and now we face the challenge to build the future, strive for the common good, serve with responsibility the many marginalised people, build with generosity, cultivate healthy tolerance and engage in fruitful dialogue with all the political and social forces. Divisions, conflict and all that threatens social harmony must be put aside": this appeal was launched by the standing council of the Peruvian Bishops’ Conference following presidential elections in which Peruvians “chose a new President and a new Congress”. In a statement "Willing to respond to Hope", the Bishops say democracy in Peru is growing and at the same time they call on citizens to concentrate "efforts on development and promotion of the human person".
The bishops recall a series of important and unquestionable points: "strengthen social harmony on the basis of respect for justice; commitment for peace, for life, for respect for human rights and fight anything which strikes democratic institutions”. They call on political parties and social groups to join forces to help the most needy and to give rise to authentic hope". "Many of our brothers and sisters are denied economic benefits and this calls for just solution in the fight against poverty, to guarantee social justice and worthy living conditions " the statement reads.
“The path is long and difficult - the Bishops conclude - but we must look to the future with optimism, trusting in human commitment and capacities to work for unity, to help and guide the country to progress and prosperity ". (RG) (Agenzia Fides 23/6/2006, righe 22, parole 324)
