AMERICA/ARGENTINA - Church concerned for social situation: poverty and maginalisation only slightly reduced

Friday, 16 June 2006

Rome (Agenzia Fides) - “The social situation in Argentina is still concerning because of the high percentage of poor people” said Bishop Jorge Casaretto president of both the Argentinean Bishops’ Commission for Social Pastoral and Caritas Argentina.
Despite a slight reduction in poverty and a few positive signs, “the question of income unbalance is still a serious problem”. “The theme of iniquity is not dealt with properly”, said Mgr Casaretto. “The whole country must realise that in Argentina the percentage of marginalised people is very high”.
Official sources report that in December 2005 33.8% of the urban population (7.9 million) lived in poverty and 12,2% (2.8 million) was destitute.
Both indicators and the rate of unemployment (10.8% in April), have since dropped progressively.
After a meeting with directors of the General Labour Confederation, the principal central organisation in Argentina, Bishop Casaretto said that the Church’s Social Pastoral will continue to convoke meetings with “the different social forces”. (AP) (16/6/2006 Agenzia Fides; Righe:21; Parole:190)
