EUROPE/ITALY - Legionaries of Christ Semper Altius Foundation builds a school for poor children in Guatemala

Rome (Agenzia Fides) - A school being built in a poor district of Guatemala by the Semper Altius Foundation www.altius.org of the Legionaries of Christ should be ready by January 2007. It joins 23 other schools with a total 15,000 pupils in 7 other countries in South America Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, El Salvador, Mexico and Venezuela which are part of a Mano Amigo network of schools of all grades.
The Foundation works with the Università Europea di Roma www.unier.it which aims to promote all round education consisting of professional qualification but also personal, moral and spiritual growth and also to encourage genuine caring for others.
The Semper Altius Foundation born of the Catholic Congregation of priests the Legionaries of Christ, has just started its activity in Italy. Its mission is to transform the lives of people living in extreme poverty, offering services of education, healthcare and development. The Foundation’s motto is "Charity which transforms", charity which is not only economic help but also formation, education, to offer poor people equal opportunities for a better future. In Italy the Foundation will devote itself to activity in the area of assistance to unaccompanied minors. It also plans to open services of juridical, psychological and medical counselling for immigrants.
Other initiatives in Italy include a Boys Town at Maddaloni, Caserta near Naples, for 1,600 boys and, "Angels for a Day", to help needy children in city suburbs. The "angels" are groups of volunteers who care for one or more children for a day. (AP) (13/6/2006 Agenzia Fides; Righe:29; Parole:327)
