EUROPE/RUSSIA - 250 million dollars for programmes in poor countries of Africa to fight infective diseases and promote energy infrastructures

Rome (Agenzia Fides) - Russia and the World Bank have agreed to supply 250 million dollars for development in some of the poorest countries in Africa. The news was announced during the recent G8 Meeting Saint Petersburg.
To help people most affected by hunger and disease a decision was taken to promote development programmes to prevent infective diseases and promote energy infrastructures.
The president of the World Bank and the Russian finance minister explained that the aim is to supply a frame in which to develop other kinds of aid. With regard to infective diseases the partners intend to help fight malaria, which kills over one million people every year: Moscow will help the World Bank programme to reach concrete results by 2010. In Africa 535 million people live without electricity and the number will rise to 586 million in 2030.
