ASIA/SOUTH KOREA - Catholics in South Korea send aid for Java earthquake victims

Thursday, 8 June 2006

Seoul (Agenzia Fides) - Korea’s Catholics are sending aid to victims of the May 27 earthquake in Java, Indonesia. The area most affected is in and around Yoyakarta. Fear that an eruption of Merapi Volcano may make the situation even worse, generated spontaneous generous aid on the part of Korea’s Catholics.
Various Catholic organisations and parishes are collecting clothing, food and funds and offerings for Masses for the dead and their families.
The aid is being organised and co-ordinated by Caritas Korea, which has launched a fund raising campaign. A generous donation of 50,000 dollars was collected by the One Body One Spirit organisation to help the most vulnerable sectors of the population, mothers and children and the elderly.
Caritas Korea, works closely with Caritas Internationalis, to provide medicines, tents, food, and other prime necessities. (Agenzia Fides 8/6/2006 righe 23 parole 231
