AFRICA/DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO - MONUC supplies medical and social assistance in Bunkonde

Kananga (Agenzia Fides) - The Senegalese contingent of the unit of integrated police of the United Nations mission in Congo/Kinshasa, MONUC, supplied emergency care for people in Bunkonde a small locality of 10,000 inhabitants situated 75 km from Kananga in the southern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
According to DIA, the organisation guaranteed free medical sessions for the people of the town examining 127 patients and giving free medical supplies of pharmaceutical products and making health personnel available to the hospital team of the local dispensary.
Moreover, also thanks to support from MONUC a campaign was organised to increase awareness with regard to sexually transmitted diseases, especially HIV/AIDS. Items of clothing were also donated for the people of Bunkonde and night patrols made available to guarantee public order during the electoral period.
