AMERICA/UNITED STATES - Catholic hospitals in New Jersey promote research on adult stem cells

Tuesday, 30 May 2006

New Jersey (Agenzia Fides) - Legislators in support of research with embryo stem cells and representatives of the local Catholic community have united to promote research with adult stem cells in the 15 Catholic hospitals in New Jersey.
The hospitals are committed to encouraging donation of the blood of the umbilical cord and the placenta to one of the states two blood banks. The cord and the placenta contain only the mother’s adult stem cells and not those of the embryo on which the Church opposes research.
"The moral principles of our tradition of healthcare demand that we encourage this donation", said Joseph W. Kukura, president Catholic Health Care Partnership of New Jersey.
As William Bolan, director of the New Jersey Catholic Conference, representing the Bishops of New Jersey, said in this US State there are 3.6 million Catholics. They are planning a capillary information campaign distributing to parishes an information leaflet to insert in the weekly news bulletin available on Sunday mornings after mass.
