VATICAN - International Conference on “The Fight against Corruption” organised by the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace

Tuesday, 30 May 2006

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - It undermines the correct functioning of the state, causes growing mistrust among citizens, distorts at the root the role of representative institutions, increases inequality between advanced and developing countries, contributes to underdevelopment and poverty. This is corruption, degenerating phenomenon of social life which must be fought at the internal and international level, with strategies which know its occult mechanisms and can effectively counter their devastating consequences. Scholars and experts of various origin have been convoked for this purpose by the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace for an international conference on the demanding theme “The Fight against Corruption”.
Introduced by the president of the Council, Cardinal Renato Martino, with the contribution of numerous prominent persons the meeting will discuss the phenomenon of corruption, in the private and public sectors, in low productivity countries and high productivity countries. The meeting will try to identify ways for building a culture of legality, essential in the fight against corruption, with the involvement of various social and political forces, and also local Churches with all their spiritual and organisational resources. Special attention will be given the Catholic Social teaching on legality and the fight against corruption with a specific conference by Bishop Giampaolo Crepaldi, secretary of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, on the basis of the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Catholic Church published by this Council .
