New Delhi (Agenzia Fides) - Recently a three day seminar of meetings, reflection, planning was held to elaborate guidelines for the activity of the Indian Bishops’ Commission for Justice and Peace. The seminar held in New Delhi was chaired by Bishop Yvon Ambroise bishop of Tuticorin who is head of the JP Commission. Participants from all over India focussed on essential points: promoting social justice and development, reducing gap between rich and poor, fight marginalisation and abuse; defend the most vulnerable people in society, women, children the elderly, Dalits, Tribals and protecting their rights and living conditions.
During the reflection the Commission members underlined that peace is essential for development and that therefore it must be pursued in relations with other countries, (for example with Pakistan with regard Kashmir) and at home, (in north east India).
Participants expressed concern for growing tension between religious communities instigated and manipulated by radical forces which often threaten the fundamental right of every citizen to freedom of religion.
The Commission renewed its commitment to promoting respect for the human person and human rights and to furthering the development of the country. Education remains a basic means of helping the indigenous peoples be aware of their civil, social and political rights and to take their proper place in society.
