Hong Kong (Agenzia Fides) - Service, use of talents of young people, promoting in them a sense of community, encouraging the spirit of commitment for society: these are the goals of a Service Project promoted by the Hong Kong Youth Association. The project was embraced by Hong Kong Shi Li Secondary School. According to Hong Kong’s diocesan bulletin Kong Ko Bao the school received an award for best participation in 2,000 hours of social service involving young people in assisting the poor, the elderly and the weakest sectors of society.
Recently 200 Shi Li pupils guided by volunteers, pastoral operators, volunteer parents and teachers undertook service of the elderly. In five Homes for the elderly the young people organised singing and dancing, plays, games, lotteries and company. The service was highly successful. Pupils who took part said, “the elderly have so much experience, wisdom, cultural and scientific knowledge; they taught us much more than we could never learn from books”.
