AFRICA/KENYA - Eighteen deacons and a priest from six different countries not only African ordained in Makuyu

Makuyu (Fides Service) - Great celebrations on 13 May at the Salesian mission in Makuyu for the ordination of 18 deacons and one priest. The solemn Mass with the rite of ordination was presided by Bishop Peter Kihara of Muranga diocese. The 18 deacons (16 Salesians and 2 Franciscans) come from Ethiopia, Cameroon, Nigeria, Russia, Paraguay and India. The priest Fr. John Mwangi is a Salesian born in Kenya who will minister at the Salesian parish in Korr, in the diocese of Marsabit.
Among those present for the solemn occasion Fr Alfredo Roca, Superior of the Salesian Visitatoria for Africa Ethiopia-Eritrea (AET) and Fr Joseph Pulikkal, Salesian inspector for East Africa (AFE). The liturgy lasted five hours and was lived with great intensity and joy by a large number of faithful who had come from near and far for the occasion. According to the Salesian bulletin ANS, in Mukuyu the Salesians have a parish which follows 12 religious centres, 1 centre for technical training and 1 Sunday Oratory. Present also the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians in charge of a Family Home, a parish secondary school, a dispensary and the co-ordination of catechesis in the diocese. (S.L.)
