Saturday, 20 May 2006

Rome (Fides Service) - An International Interdisciplinary Conference on Children's Rights organised by the IAP Inter-University Attraction Poles in Ghent, Belgium has just ended. IAP members are the three most important universities of Belgium. Participants included experts in sociology, law, psychology, pedagogy from many different countries and institutions and international organisations active in the field of children’s rights.
The aim of the Conference was to assess, more than 15 years since the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the application of the international standards of promotion and protection of the rights and living conditions of children all over the world and correct interpretation and application of the principles and objectives contained in the UN Charter, and ascertain if, thanks to the latter, there has been a change of social attitudes in countries where it has been applied and if it is opportune to assess changes which allow better concretisation of values and goals which animate the Convention. The Conference in Ghent, with one hundred speakers from all over the world, was an opportunity to create a place of debate which allows sharing of acquired experience and indication of new and more effective strategies.
