Florianopolis (Fides Service) - The Church in Brazil opens today 18 May in Florianopolis its 15th National Eucharistic Congress which will last until Sunday on the theme “He is with us” and the slogan “Come and See” . Pope Benedict XVI asked Cardinal Eusebio Óscar Scheid Archbishop of Rio di Janeiro to be his special envoy to this major national church event.
The main events in the four day congress will include: a theology symposium with diocesan representatives from all over Brazil (19 and 20 May); Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament every day 7am to 6pm; Youth Rally 20 May; Mass at the Shrine of Saint Paulina 19 May. In the evening of 19 May bishops and priests congress participants will be invited to preside Masses in different churches in the archdiocese. “A Eucharistic Congress is an opportunity to render visible our faith and missionary spirit” said Bishop Odilo P. Scherer, Auxiliary of Sao Paolo and secretary general of the Brazilian Bishops’ Conference. “The Eucharistic celebration is a great moment in the life of the community which renders visible the mystery of the Church - the secretary continued .
