Monday, 15 May 2006

Asuncion (Fides Service) - The Church is not foreign to the world of communications, she is aware of the importance of the media and influence they have on the way individuals and communities think and behave transmitting often unfortunately a culture which goes against the fundamental moral values and in particular those concerning the family. This is why the Church is ever more committed to promoting initiatives to help diffuse the Gospel in and through the media.
One of these initiatives is a seminar of formation in communications for bishops of the Southern Horn countries to be held 16 al 18 May in Asuncion Paraguay. The countries invited are Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay. The main aim is formation of bishops and executive secretaries in communications areas of the Southern Horn to give them a broad view of the problems and opportunities offered by communications to spread the Gospel message in the present day context.
Specific objectives include: exchange of experience of different countries in the area of communications; analyse the media and cultural situation in which each national Church is called to act; analyse similarities and differences in communications in the region; work on forms of production and elaboration with Catholic contents; elaborate proposals to improve present situation; identify challenges in communications to which the Southern Horn must respond as a regional unity and in each specific country .
