Beijing (Agenzia Fides) - Sixty-nine representatives of the "religious world" have been selected to participate in the sessions of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, which began on March 4 in Beijing, in the presence of President Xi Jinping. The 69 members of religious communities represent 3.18% of the total number of participants in the sessions of the Committee, which stands at 2,172. Among the 69 members of different religious communities, 25 are members of the national Buddhist community, 12 are Taoists, 12 belong to the national Islamic community, 11 are members of the national Catholic community and 9 belong to the national Evangelical-Protestant community. The Committee, whose sessions last seven and a half days, will end on Saturday 11 March in the afternoon.
The National Committee meeting in Beijing is the current organ of the Political Consultative Conference of the People's Republic of China which, within the national political system, is the organization responsible for representing the political demands of the social and political sectors and groups of the People's Republic, under the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party. The Conference is China's highest institution with advisory functions.
Bishops Joseph Li Shan, Joseph Shen Bin and John Fang Xingyao are among the 11 Catholics attending the current sessions in Beijing. Joseph Li Shan is Archbishop of Beijing, while Joseph Shen Bin heads the Diocese of Haimen (Jiangtsu Province) and John Fang Xingyao is Bishop of Linyi (Shandong Province).
