Friday, 28 April 2006

Bogota (Fides Service) - As part of preparations for the 5th General Conference of the Council of Latin American Bishops’ Conferences CELAM next year 2007, 13 to 31 May in Aparecida, Brazil, with the theme ““Disciples and missionaries of Jesus Christ that our Countries may have Life in Him” (I am the Way, the Truth and the Life - Jn 14,6)”, the CELAM department for mission and spirituality organised the 3rd Latin American Catechesis Week in Bogota (Colombia) 1 to 6 May 2006.
The main goal of the event is to bring the contribution of catechesis to CELAM 5, proposing paths for forming authentic missionary disciples so that education in the faith all over the continent may be effective and courageous and in keeping with the Gospel, the organisers say.
Specific goals include: propose the kerygma and Christian Initiation as urgent and indispensable for the formation of missionary disciples; give new impulse to formation of catechists as qualified animators of processes for the formation of missionary disciples; indicate clear criteria to ensure that old and new structures for catechesis are adequate for the formation of missionary disciples; propose strategies of Christian Initiation for the formation of missionary disciples of different age groups and social conditions.
