Vatican City (Fides Service) - The Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI , through the Holy See’s secretary of state Cardinal Angelo Sodano, addressed to the Military Ordinary for Italy Archbishop Angelo Bagnasco, a telegramme of sympathy for the victims of an attack on 27 April on an Italian military vehicle in Nassiriya in Iraq. Here is the text of the telegramme:
“Learning with deep sadness the news of attack in Nassiriya in which Italian military and a Rumanian soldier were killed while generously on a mission of peace, Supreme Pontiff expresses firm condemnation for yet another act of violence in Iraq which is a fresh obstacle on the path to harmony and the recovery of that tormented country. His Holiness assures his spiritual closeness to the families of those killed struck by such grief, the Armed Forces, Italian and Rumanian, and respective national communities, as well as fervent prayers for the souls of the young lives so brusquely ended, invoking God’s comfort for those who mourn this tragic loss and imparting to all a special Apostolic Blessing especially upon the wounded and all those, civilians and military, involved in service to that sorely tried people”.
