AMERICA/ARGENTINA - Bishops of southern Chile and Argentina meet to intensify mutual knowledge, consolidate brotherhood and discuss the migratory problem in the region

San Carlos de Bariloche (Fides Service) - The Catholic Bishops of southern Chile and Argentina met 18 and 19 April at San Carlos di Bariloche (Argentina) to intensify mutual knowledge and consolidate brotherhood among bishops. During the meeting they discussed problems connected with the migratory phenomenon in the region and, since there are many Chilean immigrants in Patagonia, the Bishops of Chile illustrated the typical aspects of popular religiosity of Chilean Catholics. The Bishops exchanged opinions on possible joint pastoral activity and agreed to hold regular meetings to discuss activities and situations in different regions of Argentina and Chile. During the meeting they agreed to intensify evangelisation among the Mapuche people.
Also present at the meeting Bishop Enrique Troncoso Troncoso of Melipilla president of the Catholic Chilean Institute for Migration and Institute’s general secretary Father Leonir Chiarello CS; Fr Sante Cervellín CS, executive secretary of the Argentinean Bishops Commission for Migration, Consul General of Chile in Bariloche Don Francisco Cruz Pacheco, and the head of the Argentinean Migration Office in Bariloche Dr. Diego Puente.
