Bogota (Agenzia Fides) - A request to the main international organizations, in particular the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), to increase their support for projects not only governments, but above all civil society organizations, including religious organizations, because "they are the frontline operators to promote humanitarian, economic, legal and labor assistance to asylum seekers and migrants" . The call was made by Red Clamor, the network of Latin American churches working in the field of migration, trafficking, displaced persons and refugees, on the occasion of World Refugee Day, celebrated every year on June 20. "Coordinated work by national and local governments with relevant international institutions is essential," says Red Clamor, "but especially so with civil society organizations, which are, in many cases, the only form of assistance to which they have access. In its statement, signed by the President, Monsignor Gustavo Rodriguez, Archbishop of Yucatan (Mexico), Red Clamor underlines "the unprecedented increase in the number of people forced to leave their place of origin", which leads to an appeal to the governments to "respect and do everything possible to ensure that every person has the right to seek safety". Most states on the continent have ratified the principles enshrined in international humanitarian law. Red Clamor therefore calls on national governments to honor their commitments in this regard. "In light of trends in international movements of people forced to leave their places of origin, the growing climate of rejection and xenophobia felt in several countries, the strategy and deliberate efforts of many governments not to grant the status of refugee to the vast majority of applicants", Red Clamor calls not only to respond to the needs of this situation with political will, but also to "establish transparent and inclusive mechanisms for the design, development and evaluation of policies to refugees and migrants in the countries of the region".
