AMERICA/VENEZUELA - Statement from Bishops’ Conference on the death of Conferenc under-secretary Fr. Jorge Piñango Mascareño,

Caracas (Agenzia Fides) - The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Venezuela issued a statement with regard to the death of the Conference under-secretary Fr. Jorge Piñango Mascareño, last seen on Friday 21 April and found dead on Monday 24 April.
“The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Venezuela has the sad duty to report the death of Rev. Fr. Jorge Piñango Mascareño, under secretary of our Conference - the statement reads -. Deeply shocked and grieved we pray to the all Merciful Father for the eternal repose of Fr Jorge’s soul. We offer deep sympathy to his elderly parents and to the Particular Church of Barquisimeto assuring them of our prayers.
The human and priestly life of Fr Piñango was marked by over 20 years of priestly ministry, a spirit of the Beatitudes and a clear vocation to serve. The competent authorities will investigate the cause of his death which happened under strange circumstances. For our part we are ready to cooperate if necessary and to guarantee that truth and justice are respected”.
Fr. Jorge Piñango Mascareño was born in 1959 in Barquisimeto and ordained a priest on 10 August 1985. He studied for the priesthood at the Javeriana University Colombia and the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He had been a docent at a number of universities and Seminaries. He was appointed under secretary of the Venezuelan Bishops’ Conference in 2002. (RG) (Agenzia Fides 25/4/2006; righe 18, parole 231)
