Lima (Agenzia Fides) - Since 2013, the Bishops of Peru have decided to celebrate, on the third Sunday of Easter, the "Day of the Catechist", whose patron is St. Francis Solano.
For this reason, the Episcopal Commission for Catechesis and Biblical Pastoral Care of the Peruvian Episcopal Conference has invited all the ecclesiastical jurisdictions of Peru and the faithful to celebrate the annual event, which this year falls on Sunday, May 1.
Placed in the Easter season and at the beginning of the catechetical courses, the Day constitutes "a propitious occasion to underline the character of the catechist as a disciple-missionary", emphasizes the Commission, which recalls how this Sunday's Gospel, the story of the miraculous catch, offers "excellent clues to illuminate the catechist's mission". The Commission therefore exhorts us to "become aware of our precious vocation as educators in the faith" and the Day is also a useful occasion for "the entire parish community to become aware of the importance of this ministry". Among the subsidies prepared is a day of retreat, which in this period of the synodal path indicated by Pope Francis to the entire Church, proposes to reflect and deepen the figure of the Catechist as a witness and educator of the ecclesial-community dimension. Faced with the sad panorama of the wars that devastate the planet, all Christians must "educate themselves in dialogue, in respectful communication, in encounter. Catechists even more so, because they are educators of a faith that must be embodied in concrete attitudes and gestures of brotherhood." The parable of the Good Samaritan is proposed as a passage for reflection, to be analyzed and internalized according to some points of reflection and questions, as well as some passages from the Directory for Catechesis and the Encyclical "Fratelli Tutti". Referring to the synodal path, the manual points out that "catechists are the first called to live synodality, to walk together, which is at the root of our vocation as educators of the faith." For this Day, it is also suggested to carry out the sending of the Catechists in one of the busiest Sunday masses in the parish, or in the mass in which there is more presence of children or young people.
