San José (Agenzia Fides) - "After two years of Covid-19 pandemic, Catholics have again celebrated the mysteries of the faith in churches and in the streets. This fills us with joy and deep gratitude to the Lord because it allowed us to rekindle our spirit, to meet one another personally and to nourish our common hope", said the bishops of Costa Rica in their Easter message. The bishops emphasized that "the resurrection of Jesus Christ opens the horizon to hope: the hope for a better life and a better country; we hope that the pandemic will end and that we will be able to overcome a series of problems that, in particular concern our weakest brothers and sisters".
The intense celebration of Holy Week in every community across the country, the bishops said in the message, must not remain an isolated event, urging them to "continue to manifest our faith in every place we find ourselves, in every situation we experience, in every moment and where it is necessary to contribute to improve our society".
With a view to the change of government following the recent elections (see Fides, 24/1/2022), the Bishops urge the new government "to take care of the improvement and growth of the country, taking into account the main problems, putting people at the center of every decision made". They then thanked the outgoing government for their commitment to Costa Rica, "we know the difficult times we have been through because of the pandemic", and "asked for blessings of the Lord for President-elect Rodrigo Chaves Robles and for all those who will take up their duties in the civil service from May, so that they may carry out their duties with wisdom, humility and success".
Finally, the bishops exhort to "proclaim the Good News of Christ's Resurrection with our lives and bear witness to love and fraternity". An appeal addressed in particular to Catholics and to all believers in general. "Likewise, we call on all people to build the bonds that will enable us to strengthen our nation in solidarity, integral development, peace and social justice", the bishops continued. "We ask or the intercession of the Virgin Mary, Queen of Angels and Patroness Saint of Costa Rica, while we assure our prayers for all the Costa Rican people", the message concludes.
