EUROPE/UKRAINE - The Order of Malta operations to help refugees have been extended

kyiv (Agenzia Fides) - With more than 12 million people in difficulty in Ukraine, of whom 6.5 million are internally displaced, the network of the Order of Malta is intensifying its aid operations both in Ukraine and in neighboring countries, where more than 4.2 million people have sought refuge from the war. According to a statement sent to Fides, the Order of Malta has distributed in Ukraine some 33,000 food rations, 4,500 blankets, tent beds and sleeping bags. Two ambulances have been delivered to hospitals and a mobile medical clinic from the international aid agency of the Order of Malta, the “Malteser International”.
Meanwhile, psychosocial aid projects for the displaced in eastern and western Ukraine continue, targeting children in particular, the note states. First aid training is being provided to more than 3,000 people. In Lviv and Ivano Frankivsk shelter is provided for more than 200 displaced people and in Berehove, close to the Hungarian border, the Order of Malta supports refugees by providing shelter, food and relief items.
In Hungary, support and collection services are offered at the Beregsurány border, as well as accommodation and assistance to arriving refugees. Reception and first aid centers operate in different parts of the country, in Budapest alone there are three, where refugees receive information and assistance. The Hungarian Assistance Service of the Order of Malta has assisted more than 43,000 refugees.
In Poland, the Order of Malta offers a transport service, medical points at the borders of Hrebenne and Korczowa, on the Ukrainian side, and food distribution in Lubycza Krolewska. In Romania, some 1,600 refugees arrive daily at the Ukrainian border in Sighetu Marmației, Siret and Satu Mare. A cross-border pick-up and drop-off service for vulnerable people is offered there. In Slovakia, a transport and accommodation service has been organized for refugees arriving at the border in Vysne Nemecke, where special assistance is given to children and mothers. Volunteers from other associations affiliated with the Order of Malta also participate in the rescue operation. “Ordre de Malte France” has deployed volunteers in Poland and Hungary and an emergency medical team is ready to intervene within 48 hours. It has also organized the transportation of more than 3 tons of medicines to hospitals in kyiv and Lviv. The Order of Malta in Germany is also transporting relief items such as clothing, blankets, hygienic and medical supplies, food tents, field kitchens, field beds and other equipment for a total of more than 2,600 tons of goods to Ukraine and neighboring countries. On the other hand, it has been in charge of evacuating dozens of wounded or sick people and transporting disabled children to safe places.
The sections in Austria, Belgium and the Czech Republic offer shelters and reception centers for the displaced. Italy coordinates the aid collected by the three Grand Priories, through its first aid corps. Likewise, many other associations, such as the Spanish, the Portuguese and the Swiss, are collaborating in the shipment of merchandise and in the launching of fundraising campaigns. The Order of Malta has collected significant financial contributions from around the world and channeled them through "Malteser International" or sent them directly to the Order's relief services in countries bordering Ukraine. The Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta, founded in Jerusalem around the year 1048, is a body of international law and a lay Catholic religious Order. Its mission is to bear witness to the faith and to serve the poor and the sick. Currently, the main activities of the Order of Malta are carried out in the field of medical and social assistance and humanitarian aid, in more than 120 countries, with 13,500 members, 80,000 volunteers and more than 42,000 doctors, nurses and paramedical assistants.
