EUROPE/UKRAINE - Online lessons for Salesian schools and activities for young people, while assistance to the population continues

Lviv (Agenzia Fides) - Despite the war and all the difficulties, the Salesians in Ukraine continue to offer education and work for young people, putting the needs of others first and sharing every resource and every good that comes to them.
Fr. Mykhaylo Chaban, Superior of the Greek-Catholic Vice Province of Ukraine, with the aid truck that arrive in Lviv from Slovakia, tells Salesian agency Ans that once a week he brings food and medicines to the most affected areas, such as Kharkiv, Dnipro, or in the Lugansk and Donetsk region… "More and more we notice new places that need food". In addition, he continues, "with the support of the Salesian Mission Office in Bonn we send bread every week to Kharkiv, and we will certainly increase the quantities as soon as our new bakery is operational" which is being built in Lviv thanks to a project supported by “Don Bosco Mission Bonn”.
With the help of the Salesian Mission Office of Lugano, interventions are being carried out at the house in Lviv, to adapt the large structure as a refuge for those who do not know where to go. The works are expected to finish within a month and the structure will also be used for a part of the city district.
Also on an educational level, the Salesians remain active: "We are trying to work again with the children through sport, we did the first training sessions - continues Fr. Chaban -. We took the liberty of starting these sports activities to help them gradually get out of the stress of war. And we will also try to involve children and young refugees". Also in Lviv, the high school and the Vocational Training Center carry out their lessons online, and 80% of the approximately 550 students participate in the courses, some also connected from abroad. The "Vsesvit" Salesian school in Zhytomyr also has online teaching, with a participation rate of 90% of the student population. Certainly the war has profoundly marked the condition of this institution: 50% of the pupils and 20% of the school staff are abroad and the oratory, which has been operating regularly since mid-March, sees between 4 and 8 young people present ... Even in Odessa, distance learning is exploited so as not to abandon the education of young people: the Salesian school has 120 students, of whom about half take part in lessons, mostly from abroad.
