Accra (Agenzia Fides) - "It takes time to overcome the sorrowful repercussions of situations like the disaster you have suffered", said His Exc. Msgr. John Baptist Attakruh, Bishop of Sekondi-Takoradi, addressing the victims of the explosion that occurred on January 20 in Apiatse, in the western region of Ghana. Msgr. Attakruh accompanied a delegation from the National Council of Catholic Women who donated money and basic necessities, the fruit of a special collection carried out in recent weeks.
The President of the association, Mrs. Oppong expressed the catholic women’s sympathy with the victims of the gas explosion, particularly women and children. The Municipal Chief Executive thank the women and Ghanaians in general, noting that the country did not abandoned them in their time of misfortune. She also expressed personal and community gratitude to Bishop John Baptist Attakruh for allowing Bogoso Parish Hall to serve as a temporary shelter for victims who survived the explosion.
The Bishop of the Sekondi-Takoradi diocese encouraged the community to remain firm in their beliefs, adding that "God's grace will help you bounce back to normalcy". On January 20, a truck operated by a Spanish mining company transporting 10 tons of mining explosives between Tarkwa and Chirano collided head-on with a motorcycle near the village of Apiatse. In the explosion that followed the accident, 13 people died and at least 200 were injured, 45 of whom required hospitalization. The explosion created a 20-meter-wide crater and left at least 380 people homeless. About 100 road vehicles were also damaged by the explosion, which also seriously damaged electrical infrastructure.
