AFRICA /D.R. CONGO - Alarm for hundreds of internally displaced persons in the Ruzizi plateau Kinshasa (Agenzia Fides) - The plateau of Ruzizi, in South Kivu, in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, has several hundred internally displaced people in difficulty, as reported to Agenzia Fides by ACMEJ, a local civil society association.
In the reception sites of Bulaga and Langala, in the middle plateaus, in the Lemera group, there are more than 400 families in distress, while in the structures of Katogota-centre and Kamonyi, in the Ruzizi plateau, in the Itara-Luvungi group, 149 families were examined by the NRC (Norwegian Refugee Council) before the second influx; and another 200 families were screened by AVSI. Internally displaced persons (IDPs), housed in temporary structures near villages whose inhabitants are already in distress, need humanitarian assistance in the form of food, basic necessities, medicine and of tents. The return to their villages of origin is very difficult, as military clashes continue, with serious human rights violations: burning of houses, killing of civilians, looting of property, death threats against local leaders and human rights defenders. "The displaced people continue to hope that the national and provincial governments as well as the international humanitarian workers working in South Kivu will come to their aid, especially since it has not been possible to harvest in the Ruzizi plain", said ACMEJ, which appealed to both humanitarian organizations and security forces to protect the population against the violence of the various armed groups raging in the area.
