Rome (Agenzia Fides) - While the Orionine priests, Fr. Egidio Montanari and Fr. Moreno Cattelan in Lviv continue their mission of assisting and welcoming refugees fleeing from cities at war (see Fides, 25/2/2022; 3/3/2022), in the Orionine realities in Italy and abroad, a real relay of solidarity is taking place, which involves men and women religious, laity, volunteers, friends and benefactors close to the Opera Don Orione, but also many people who want in one way or another to show their closeness to the Ukrainian people. Don Giovanni Carollo, Director of the Orionine religious province "Mother of Divine Providence" (which includes Italy, Albania, Romania and Ukraine), says that "many people have heard of the work of our missionaries and wanted to provide everything possible to help them: from basic necessities to entire reception structures, as well as their own time and means, declaring their readiness to physically go to the Ukrainian border with Romania, Poland or Hungary to welcome the refugees who are to arrive in Italy. In a few days, without much initial organization, the desire to be close to others has really led to the realization that, as Don Orione said, "charity will never end" and "will save the world".
Currently 127 refugees are accommodated in the Orione Houses in 7 Italian locations. There are also other Orionine structures that have been set up to accommodate another 124 people. Another 203 places available come from Orionine realities, municipalities and families. "In the meantime - Don Carollo recalls - the collections of material goods and economic contributions are also continuing. For the former, in particular food, medicines and clothing, we have indicated three reference centers: Rome (Don Orione Center in Monte Mario), Bergamo and Genoa. The material collected will then be sent to Ukraine with the help of the non-profit organization Need you from Acqui Terme (AL). Finally, with regard to fundraising, that organized by the Don Orione Onlus Foundation continues and the resources collected during the Orionine MissionDay, scheduled for Sunday 13 March, will also be destined for Ukraine".
