Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - Taking care of students and giving them all the necessary material, cultural and spiritual support: it is for this purpose that at St. Peter's College, an institute dependent on the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, Cardinal Luis Antonio Gokim Tagle, Prefect of "Propaganda Fide", inaugurated on February 22, on the occasion of the feast of the "Chair of St. Peter", one of the buildings of the College, which was the object of a complete renovation during the last two years. After the restoration, which was carried out thanks to the contribution of benefactors, the building, built starting from 1959 - and which housed the International Center for Missionary Animation from 1974 to 1981 - can accommodate 41 students, who have spacious and comfortable rooms and has a chapel, reading rooms and dining rooms, a large hall and a large library that serves the entire College.
In addition, one wing of the building is used by the nuns and the renovations have completely reorganized their spaces. During the inauguration, the rector of Saint Peter's College, Father Carlos Del Valle, also announced that each building of the college will be dedicated to a former student who distinguished himself for his virtues and personalities that have marked the life of this big home.
In particular, the "main house" where the College began, commonly called the "old house", will be dedicated to Cardinal Celso Costantini (1876-1958), founder of St. Peter's College, first apostolic delegate in China, and from 1935 to 1953, secretary of the "Sacra Congregatio De Propaganda Fide". The adjacent building, commonly called "New House", will be dedicated to Cardinal Laurean Rugambwa (1912-1997), who was the first Bishop alumnus, in the years 1948-1951, then the first Tanzanian Bishop and also the first African cardinal. The building commonly called "Castelletto" will be dedicated to St. Josef Freinademetz (1852-1908), an Austrian presbyter, member of the Society of the Divine Word and was a missionary in China. Finally, the building under renovation was named after Venerable Cardinal François-Xavier Nguyen Van Thuan (1928-2002), whose heroic virtues were recognized by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints in 2017, which was also a former college student.
