AFRICA/SOUTH SUDAN - "United in prayers for justice and peace": the first Lenten campaign begins in the diocese of Tombura Yambio

Thursday, 3 March 2022

Tombura Yambio (Agenzia Fides) - "Celebrate our differences, promote our unity, heal our wounds and renew our country. Lent is just around the corner", says the Bishop of the Diocese of Tombura Yambio, Msgr. Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala, exhorting the faithful to a constructive commitment for a Lent of solidarity. "It is the first time that we have launched a Lenten campaign in our diocese", the prelate writes to Agenzia Fides. "We must not forget where we come from. In the recent past, we have lost lives, including those of many children. Many people have been displaced, have lost property, loved ones, have lived in the midst of mistrust and hatred, others have been left mutilated and with serious mental disorders (see Fides, 4/8/2021). In 2021, shameful, bitter and unjustified violence was perpetrated in our State", he declares in a stern tone. "As for the peace agenda of our diocese, all people must walk together to ensure peaceful coexistence regardless of cultural differences". In this sense, Bishop Kussala has promoted a march for reconciliation, justice and peace to be held on March 11, 2022, to consolidate the launch of the Tombura 2022 Lenten Campaign. "I wish to appeal to all parishes, institutions and missions to join this march and not allow themselves to be bothered by any malefactor".
"Prayer, fasting and almsgiving are the three traditional pillars of Lenten observance. It is a time of renunciation and reconciliation. A time for deeper introspection and to be at peace with oneself and with God. Forty days of special grace", he concludes. (EHK/AP) (Agenzia Fides, 3/3/2022)
