AFRICA/BURKINA FASO - Militaries in revolt announce the arrest of the President; Fides sources" expected speech on TV by the coup leaders"

Monday, 24 January 2022 military   coup

Ouagadougou (Agenzia Fides) - "The military has announced that they will speak on national television shortly and perhaps we will know better what is happening", local sources say to Fides from Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, where mutinous soldiers claimed to have arrested President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré and other high officials of the State.
"At the moment we only have the declaration of the soldiers in revolt" report Fides sources, who asked for anonymity for security reasons. "Yesterday, Sunday, January 23, the military in some barracks mutinied to ask for the replacement of the army leaders and adequate resources to fight the jihadists. During the night there were shootings near some barracks and this morning the mutinous soldiers announced the arrest of the Head of State.
"Last night the government proclaimed a curfew" recall our sources. "Internet connections have not worked since Sunday. Today we see the presence of soldiers and policemen on the streets but at the moment the situation seems calm. The population lives waiting to understand the developments of the mutiny", conclude our sources.
President Kaboré, in power since 2015 and re-elected five years later with the promise of making the anti-jihadist struggle his priority, had been increasingly challenged by a population exasperated by jihadist violence and its inability to face it. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides, 24/1/2022)
