Port au Prince (Agenzia Fides) - Sunday, January 9 will forever be remembered in the hearts of parishioners and in the annals of the Redemptorist Congregation as the date of the inauguration of the new parish church of St. Gerard Maiella in the Carrefour-Feuilles district of the capital, Port-au-Prince. Almost 12 years after the earthquake that destroyed the former parish church, and after four years of hard work, Archbishop Max Leroy Mesidor Port-au-Prince inaugurated the new parish church in a solemn and joyful atmosphere. The new church, though large, was still too small to accommodate everyone who wanted to attend the celebration. The symbolic ceremony was experienced very intensely by everyone present.
In his address, the parish priest, Father Jean-Claudel Pierre, C.S.R., thanked the Lord for this work and the Archbishop for his pastoral care of the faithful of St. Gerard as well as the architects, engineers and workers who helped to rebuild this building. He also thanked all institutions and people who made a financial contribution. After the inauguration, the church will have to be fully completed in a second phase of work, so that the generosity of the parishioners and all people of good will will continue to be needed, he concluded.
