Brasilia (Agenzia Fides) - The visibility of the contribution offered by women to the mission of the Church, in Brazil and in the world, was one of the main objectives of the Commission for Missionary Action and Inter-ecclesial Cooperation of the Bishops' Conference of Brazil (CNBB) in the year 2021. To this end, the cycle of online meetings was created with the theme: "Women on a mission", which began in the month in which International Women's Day is celebrated, on March 8, and ended on December 8, Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Mary (see Fides, 8/3/2021).
"This year was a special year from the point of view of the collaboration of women in the Mission of the Church - underlines, in a note sent to Fides, the Councilor of the Commission, the Comboni, Sister Sandra Amado -. Starting with Pope Francis, who has appointed several women for unprecedented positions in various Church organizations. We have exceeded our expectations regarding the monthly meeting of women at the service of reflection and the mission of women in evangelization".
In the Church in Brazil, there are several women who are part of the "living and operational structure" of evangelizing action, at all ecclesial levels, from small communities to coordinating positions in bodies of national impact.
Sister Sandra points out that each appointment of "Women in Mission" has brought to the agenda an important topic in the life and mission of the Church. "The CNBB, through this initiative of the Commission, has shown its solidarity in recognizing the importance of working together, women and men, all committed to building the Kingdom of God. The world and society need this balance to continue in the mission of God, in the today of a Church that goes forth".
"Women give an indispensable contribution to society and pastoral responsibilities. However, the Church recognizes that there is still a need to expand the spaces for a more incisive female presence in the Church", observed the Bishops in the Document 105 of the CNBB, approved in 2016.
